Soccer World Cup 2010 - Book South Africa Accommodation Online - NOW
South Africa won the bid for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. This promises to become a memorable event in the South African history. The country has allready, successfully, hosted the Rugby as well as the Cricket World Cups but has probably never seen anything of the magnitude which the Soccer World Cup brings with it. Everybody is working hard to get the country ready. Stadiums were being built and revamped at a frantic pace. The Greenpoint Stadium is referred to as the "Stadium of dreams". Although it is accepted that there should be enough accommodation, in all probability, there won't be. During the previous world cup in Germany about 800000 people were expected... 2 million pitched up. Although one can understand that this happened because of the geographical position of Germany and it was easy for Europeans to stream across the borders one should not lose sight of the fact that Africa is also a continent. This means that there is a distinct possibillity that South Africa will be swamped by other African soccer fans. The estimated 220000 people expected to visit South Africa might easily double or even triple. Soccer fans should make sure they book their accommodation well in advance.
A subtropical location, moderated by ocean on three sides of the country and the altitude of the interior plateau, account for the warm temperate conditions so typical of South Africa - and so popular with its foreign visitors. South Africa is famous for its sunshine. It's a relatively dry country, with an average annual rainfall of about 464mm (compared to a world average of about 860mm). While the Western Cape gets most of its rainfall in winter, the rest of the country is generally a summer-rainfall region.
In 1652 Jan van Riebeeck, a Dutchman working for the HOIK (Dutch East Indian Company) settled in the Cape of storms. Before the Dutch and consequently the French, Germans and the British came to South Africa the population in the Cape consisted mainly of a group of people called “Hottentots”. In the 1700’s a group of farmers called the “trek Boers” started pushing northwards where they met a diversity of cultures and people. The Cape Colony was granted representative legislature in 1853 and self-government in 1872. Between these two dates, a dramatic new element was introduced to the economic, and consequently political, balance - the discovery of diamonds and subsequent establishment of Kimberley. For the first time it became evident that there was wealth for the taking in the subcontinent. Rival claims by the Orange Free State, the ZAR and Nicholas Waterboer, chief of the West Griquas - a community of mixed race - were defeated and the area was incorporated into the Cape Colony in1880. Three years later, when gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand, President Paul Kruger presided over a financial turnaround of spectacular proportions - but he also saw a serious threat to Afrikaner independence develop as huge numbers of newcomers, mostly British, descended on the gold fields. To cut a long story short – The Boer war erupted between the British and the Boers. Initially the Boers were triumphant and General Jan Smuts, who had been Kruger's state attorney, eventually led his troops to within 190km of Cape Town - and in response Lord Kitchener adopted a scorched-earth policy and set up racially separate civilian concentration camps in which some 26 000 Boer women and children and 14 000 black and coloured people were to die in appalling conditions. The war ended in Boer defeat at the Peace of Vereeniging in 1902. When the Union of South Africa came into being on 31 May 1910, the only province with a non-racial franchise was the Cape, and blacks were barred from being members of parliament. Of the estimated 6 million inhabitants of the Union in that year, 67% were black African, 9% coloured and 2,5% Asian. From the 1930’s developments in the ANC symbolically marked the start of what was to be nearly 50 years of head-to-head conflict between that organisation and the Nationalist Party. In April 1944 the ANC Youth League was formed. Its first president was AM Lembede (who died three years later); Nelson Mandela was its secretary. Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu were among those who came to the fore as the influence of the Youth League in the broader ANC increased. The Nationalist Party, however, was gathering strength and, in a surprise result, gained power in the 1948 election - power that it would not relinquish until 1994. Apartheid became official government ideology. Three decades of political crisis followed in South Africa. The country was ostracized by the rest of the world. 1989 was the year in which the logjam started to break up. Negotiations had been entered into between Mandela and PW Botha, but these were secret. Dissension within the Nationalist Party, in combination with Botha's ill health, led to his resignation, and he was replaced by FW de Klerk. After an election in September, De Klerk released Walter Sisulu and seven other political prisoners. South Africa's first democratic election was held on 26, 27 and 28 April 1994, with victory going to the ANC in an alliance with the Communist Party and Cosatu. Nelson Mandela was sworn in as President on May 10 with FW de Klerk and the ANC's Thabo Mbeki as Deputy Presidents. Here we are today... a democracy. South Africa can now truly be called: "The Rainbow Nation". Be sure to visit the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. This is a huge granite structure, erected in memory of the "Groot Trek" (Big trek) which the Boers undertook from the Cape. "Die Kasteel" (The Castle) is the fort which was built by Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town and a "must see" for visitors in Cape Town. The Union Buildings in Pretoria is also a beautiful piece of architecture and is used by members of parliament. The "Big Hole" in Kimberley is probably the biggest open diamond mine in the world. Although it isn't operational any more it is an awesome sight. Gold Reef City in Johannesburg pays tribute to the gold miners of old. It has a very nice theme park which can be enjoyed by all members of the family. Ushaka Marine World in Durban is also a place to visit with lots of things to do for the whole family.
