Local Attractions:
Places of interest: The Panorama Route to the Blyde River Canyon offers awe-inspiring views of forest-clad cliffs, canyons and plains as far as the eye can see. The Lowveld Escarpment is created where the inner Southern African plateau with a mean altitude of 1200m, abruptly plunges down to the Lowveld with sheer drops of up to 1000m. Featuring God's Window, Lisbon Waterfall (82,5m), Berlin Falls (80m), Bourke's Luck Potholes, Three Rondavels and the Blyde River Canyon (one of the natural wonders of Southern Africa, third deepest, and the only green canyon in the world). The Blyde River is dammed in the gorge by a 72m high wall. Also around are Pilgrim's Rest (a living museum dedicated to the frenzy of the gold rush days), Jock of the Bushveld, (a story woven around the life and time of a young transport rider and his dog in the Lowveld in the pioneering years 1885-1887), Devil's Knuckles, (used to be the only route across the ridge between the canyons), the Last stand of Long Tom Cannon (the last shots were fired from Long Tom Cannon by the Boers in their retreat from the British during the Boer War 1899-1902), the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, (established in 1990 as a breeding programme for cheetahs), the famous Sudwala Caves and Dinosaur Park (alongside the Houtbosloop River). Then last but most certainly not least – favourite of all - The Kruger National Park. The KNP will always be regarded as the prototype of wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. Established in 1898 the park sets a formidable standard, occupying 1 948 528 hectares.
